Try trending: barre yoga

Moksha Yoga started offering barre yoga classes at their Waverly location.

A friend of mine bought a Groupon at $59 for 2 months of unlimited barre classes and she invited me to go with her last weekend.

I’m no yoga conaisseur but as far as I knew, yoga is a relaxing, calming, soothing series of poses and stretches that improve flexibility and strength. This class blew my mind!!

From Moksha’s website: “Barre yoga is a combination of the stretching and toning movements of Pilates and yoga, the strengthening and sculpting principles of ballet, and a high-energy cardio workout—small isometric movements target and tone every muscle in your body.”

We were up and down, plié-ing, kicking, pointing our toes in and out in every direction, we did pushups on the bar, we threw our legs up onto the bar and switched up traditional yoga poses every few minutes. It was fast paced, one-hour W-O-R-K-O-U-T.

It was a great feeling to complete all the exercises throughout the workout – having no prior yoga or ballet training. I felt energized and tired at the same time. It’s nice to try something new and motivate yourself for an entire hour to just keep pushing through. The instructor of this particular practice, Heather was amazing too! She’s positive and works with you to make modifications or adjustments to any exercise or movement to better suit what your body is telling you.

The great thing about this class is you don’t need to be a pro or a yogi to try these classes. The instructors at Moksha are awesome!

As with any exercise, hydrate before you attend one of these classes. Take a huge water bottle with you too. The backs of my knees were knotted and hard as a rock the day after my ass-kicking.

Loose clothing is a bad idea. You’re moving around all over the place and the last thing you need is your shirt flying up over your head. Wear tight fitting clothes. No socks or runners needed. Moksha also supplies mats, hoops, Pilates balls and bands.
